Lauren Wasser shares her toxic shock syndrome story

Lauren Wasser, model claims that she has lost everthing after toxic shock syndrome led to her having her leg amputated.

Lauren shares her story with Vice Magazine.

Toxic shock syndrome is a complication of bacterial infections linked to tampons and tampon usage. Though not a female only disease, it is much more common for females to contract.

We have included a little history about the disease below:

"Tampons and tampon-like objects have been used by women during their menstrual cycles for centuries, but over the past 50 or so years, their composition has changed from natural ingredients like cotton to synthetic ingredients like rayon and plastic, especially among the big tampon manufacturers—Playtex, Tampax, Kotex.

These synthetic fibers, along with a tampon's absorbency, can form an ideal environment for staph bacteria to flourish. When Proctor & Gamble debuted an extra-absorbent tampon called Rely in the 80s, it created the perfect storm for TSS, resulting in a number of deaths."

"It's the most excruciating pain I've ever—I don't know how to describe it to you." —Lauren Wasser

At the hospital, the doctors were telling Lauren's mom to pray—and to prepare her casket. Lauren was put into a medic

TSS is a major issue for homeless women. With a lack of high quality products, poor hygiene and few opportunities to change and wash, women can leave tampons in (or tissue) for long periods of time. The results are unimaginable!

Shelters don't have the supplies and products aren't free, but we are working hard with organisations to ensure that this changes, and health issues such as TSS are reduced.

We need your help and are looking for volunteers and people willing to deliver donations to their local shelters. Is this you? Please contact us!
